There’s been a plethora of articles about how Medium isn’t what it was, how earnings are down and how the algorithm doesn’t seem to helping anybody at the moment. I’ve also noticed a lot of people posting about how their home page is purely about Medium related articles and how to be a writer.
Flavour is missing. Stuff that’s not about writing and morning routines.
You know what? Medium hasn’t been the same since PS. I Love You closed down.
PS. I Love You provided colour and love in an otherwise productivity focussed platform. The publication gave a home for writing about the grittier aspects of the human experience.
Yes, there were a few dating listicles along the lines of 10 things that turn the good men away, but on the whole, people shared memories of a poignant moment, observations of family life or the inside story of their relationships. It was okay to write about depression, death and taboos. You could confess a long-guarded secret or put words to feelings that many of us have but don’t dare to speak about. A story of forgiveness, or how you can’t bring yourself to forgive, all found a place there.
It wasn’t self-help, it was life — in both the macro and micro elements.
